ADU Backyard Modern

A NE Portland ADU

Inspiration:

This NE Portland client was taken by their previous stint in California, so the design emphasized a modern aesthetic with rectilinear shapes and an overall tidy appearance. The new ADU needed to be connected to the surroundings and the main house, as the client’s sister would be her new neighbor. As ADUs have become more common, we believe quality landscape design is needed to make sense of a fractured property.

Implementation:

Large poured concrete slabs connect the ADU space with the main house, and the entire yard is surrounded in Syn-Lawn turf. Clumping bamboo, and a few Columnar Yews add a bit of necessary greenery to the narrow perimeter. After construction reduced the yard size by nearly half, the backyard still maintains a spaciousness and sense of order.
