ADU Backyard Modern
A NE Portland ADU
Inspiration:
This NE Portland client had an affinity for their previous home in California, so the design emphasized a modern aesthetic with rectilinear shapes and an overall tidy appearance. The new ADU needed to be connected to the surroundings and the main house, as the client’s sister would be her new neighbor. As ADUs have become more common in Portland and beyond, we believe thoughtful landscape design is a necessary and often overlooked element in order to better harmonize an incongruous property.
Implementation:
Large poured concrete slabs connect the ADU space with the main house, and the entire yard is surrounded in Syn-Lawn turf. Clumping bamboo, and a few columnar Yews add a bit of necessary greenery to the narrow perimeter. After construction reduced the yard size by nearly half, the backyard still maintains a spaciousness and sense of order.
