Concordia Retreat

Wabi-sabi inspired Concordia Backyard with a Plant-driven aesthetic.

Inspiration:

This design was inspired by a wabi-sabi ethos of naturalism, harmony, and plant-centric design.

Implementation:

The greatest challenge the site posed was the existence of a large, slightly offset Doug-fir, firmly rooted in the front half of the backyard. This obstacle allowed the design to guide the user around the tree, towards a hidden seating area created from natural stone and accompanied by a stone seat-wall. A water feature, set in a bounty of perennials and specimen plants, completes the sensory experience. The garden has become an active playground for birds and pollinators in relatively short time, and the owners are delighted to have an enchanting garden to escape to whenever life gets a bit too busy.
